He or She? They!

How many times have you got stalled in your English sentence because you didn’t know how to refer back to a client / employee / supplier / patient: as “he” or “she”? After all, you only talked about them in general, so it could have been either, and it’s not the point, anyway … What is it that you say in such a case? Lacking something better do you say “he or she” or “his or her”?

Te hányszor akadtál már el az angol mondatodban azért, mert nem tudtad, hogyan utalj vissza az ügyfélre / munkavállalóra / beszállítóra / páciensre: „he” vagy „she”? Hiszen csak általában beszéltél róluk, szóval akármelyik lehetett, és különben sem ez számít… Te mit mondasz ilyenkor? Jobb híján azt, hogy „he or she” vagy „his or her”?

Like in the example below:

Mint az alábbi példában:

“A GOOD COACH avoidS the trap of solving every problem for HIS OR HER team as soon as it arises. Rather HE OR SHE useS these problems as teaching moments. HE OR SHE guideS and shareS insights at the right time, letting HIS OR HER team gain valuable experience along the way.”1

Well, by this point you’re about to go crazy and would just like to put an end to this whole awfully silly-sounding message.

But I’ve got good news: you can just forget about „he or she” in such situations for good if you want to, because there is something else to use: it’s „they”.

Yes, „they” (= they) can be used in third person singular – since September 2019 (as recommended by the Merriam-Webster’s Online Dictionary, APA and MLA).

Na, erre a pontra már kb. beleőrültünk az egészbe, és legszívesebben itt be is fejeznénk a szörnyen bugyután hangzó mondókánkat.

De jó hírem van: egy életre elfelejtheted ilyen helyzetekben a „he or she”-t, ha szeretnéd, ugyanis van helyette valami más: a „they”.

Igen, a „they” (=ők) használható egyesszám harmadik személyben – hivatalosan 2019 szeptembere óta (The Merriam-Webster’s Online Dictionary, APA és MLA ajánlása nyomán).

How to use „they”?

Use „they” and not „he or she” to refer to a singular client / employee / supplier, etc… But make sure there is agreement with the rest of the sentence, that is you put the verbs and other related pronouns into plural, respectively.

Hogyan használd a „they”-t?

Az egyesszámú ügyfél / munkavállaló / beszállító, stb… helyett a „they” személyes névmást használjuk, nem a „he or she”-t. De arra azért figyeljünk, hogy ezután egyeztessük a mondat további részét, vagyis az igéket és egyéb kapcsolódó névmásokat is tegyük többesszámba, értelemszerűen.

Nézzük meg, hogy hangzik az előző példa a „they”-re alapozva:

It’s much better, isn’t it? It’s worth reading the rest of the source at the link, because it shows the use of “they” later on as well.

So, sentences like this shouldn’t be a problem next time! Further examples:
